I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois and my Master’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences from Illinois State University in 2001. I moved around the Midwest with my husband and worked in hospitals doing clinical dietetics and food service management. When I moved to Kansas, I knew I wanted to get back into nutrition counseling. Although I am a trained as a dietitian, even I still found myself struggling with diets and healthy habits and doubted my ability to help others. As I researched new ways to improve upon my own well-being, I came to the understanding that diets are meant to fail – not everyone is made to have the same shape. Instead of constantly striving to fit in smaller bodies, we should aim for balanced living, where we can enjoy food and feel healthy. I am confident that I can help you on your journey, regardless of where you are at in the process.

You might be surprised that a dietitian would be against diets! The research shows that 95% of diets are not sustainable long term, with the majority of dieters gaining back more weight than what they lost. The problem is not us. Dieting creates a sense of failure due to the inevitable rule breaking, overeating, and lack of willpower. Diet rules stop us from listening to our body. Listening to our body creates confidence and well being. Intuitive eating helps us create a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body. When you learn to listen to your body, you start to take better care of it through food choices, movement and stress reduction. Intuitive eating can also be learned and applied if you have health issues. I practice using the Health at Every Size model because research shows that BMI is not an indicator of health. People of all sizes deserve respect from health care practitioners. I do not focus on weight loss because when we focus on body size, we automatically start listening to diet rules in our head and not our body cues.

I also have a passion for helping families and children learn to be intuitive eaters. Feeding children is a large part of parenting! Parents play a large role in developing a healthy food relationship. As adults know, diet culture is very strong and body shaming is very common in our society. Parents can give children a good foundation to help withstand the pressures.

I do not take insurance but I do provide a superbill for you to turn into your own insurance (check with your insurance provider regarding your own out-of-network benefits and reimbursement rates). However, you can use your HSA/FSA debit card to pay for appointments.

Melissa Conover, RD

I’m Mellissa Conover. I help active individuals level up physically, mentally, emotionally through a whole-life approach to nutrition and wellness. That success is measured beyond the scale. That community support is a necessity when achieving health goals. That anyone can accomplish their goals, they just have to believe in themselves, be willing to work hard, and invest in their health. That having accountability and a plan in place is essential for success. That food can be fun, and knowing how to fuel your body is empowering!! That you find motivation through discovering your WHY. And most important, I believe you should treat your body like it matters. It’s the only place you have to live.

I went to West Chester University for my undergraduate degree as well as my Master’s Degree, and Rutgers University to complete clinically supervised practice to become a registered dietitian. I LOVE the beach, and some of my favorite foods are peanut butter, tacos, ice cream, sushi, and a salad with all the good toppings. I’ve played sports my whole life, and understand how demanding it can be! I also understand what it’s like to think that better performance means trying every quick-fix diet in the magazines to be “skinnier” because we are told by marketing companies that is the key to success. Let me tell you, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Since becoming a dietitian and nutrition coach I have a fire in my heart and passion-fueled so deep to help active individuals stop the diet cycle of restricting and under-fueling, and instead aim to be strong, energetic, unstoppable.
